Health Day has won the LUF Relationship-Promoting Activities Prize (LUF RAP). This 5,000-euro prize is awarded to an initiative by Leiden University students that brings the academic community together.

On Tuesday 20 November, Lilian Visscher, acting Director of Leiden University Fund (LUF) and Rector magnificus Carel Stolker, LUF Board member, met with with representatives of the Lutfia Rabbani Foundation to officially establish a new matching fund called the ‘Leiden University Fund - Lutfia Rabbani Foundation Scholarship’.

At the end of 2018, the LUF announced a new annual grant: the Snouck Hurgronje Grant. This annual grant is awarded to innovative interfaculty research and teaching projects. Three project teams secured a place on the shortlist with their research proposals. They were invited to present their plan to the members of the LUF’s Committee for Academic Expenditure.

Atherosclerosis and the Darien Gap in Panama will be researched in greater detail this year with a grant from Leiden University Fund. Sander Kooijman (LUMC) and Sander van Kasteren (Faculty of Science) have been awarded a 150,000-euro LUF Impulse Grant to research the cause of atherosclerosis. And archaeologist Natalia Donner has been awarded 75,000 euros to research human presence in the impenetrable land bridge between Central and South America. She has been awarded the LUF Praesidium Libertatis Grant.

The Foundation for Packaging and the Environment (SVM) is offering through the Leiden University Fund (LUF) eight grants of 4,000 euro for master students who successfully submit a grant request for their thesis proposal related to the theme of packaging and the environment.

The LUF has taken the following measures with regard to its subsidy policy as a result of the corona crisis.

With support from the LUF International Study Fund (LISF), Janset Nil Genç spent three months conducting research in Turkey. ‘This grant meant I could do my first fieldwork and develop as an academic.’

At the Dies Natalis Festival for Alumni, we will officially launch the LUF Children's Fund! For an entire year, we will dedicate ourselves to supporting research projects by Leiden scientists that contribute to a better future for vulnerable children.

The Austrian Studies Fund was established with a festive gathering in the Faculty Club on Friday afternoon, 23 June. This fund is the successor of the Austrian Studies Foundation and will continue and expand the program of activities of the Central European Studies chair at Leiden University, which was established in 1992.
