LUF awards grants, subsidies and guaranteed subsidies to academics in Leiden. All applications are handled by the Committee for Academic Expenditure (CWB). This committee consists of professors of the various faculties.

Subsidies and grants

Each year guaranteed subsidies are awarded to academic staff. It is possible to apply (Deadlines 2010) for subsidies for the following purposes:

• Participation in a congress (Ph.D students only)
• Organisation of a congress or workshop
• Travel costs and accommodation/living expenses of a study trip (Ph.D students only)

Once a year LUF subsidies a Pilot study, and matching with subsidies provided by the Gratama Foundation and by the Byvanck Fund allows the CWB to award larger subsidies for certain academic projects. LUF also subsidises 20 professors of special chairs. Respected specialists within and outside Leiden University are able to further develop their specialist field as professors of special chairs.
