To celebrate the 448^th birthday of Leiden University the Leiden University Fund organises – in addition to our regular live dies for alumni – the online Dies Natalis for alumni on the 14^th of February. On this day, alumni from around the world come together online to listen to two inspiring speakers from Leiden University with the possibility to connect and network with your fellow alumni. We will be broadcasting live, with an entirely English programme, from the Academy Building in Leiden!

The programme

We will start at 19.00 o’clock (CET) with a welcome from prof. Annetje Ottow, the president of Leiden University’s Executive Board, after which our first speaker will take the digital floor.
Our first speaker is prof. Ariane Briegel and she takes you into the unseen world of microbes.
Our second speaker is dr. Vineet Thakur and he talks about the origins of International Relations as a discipline and the consequences for international politics.
Around 20.35 o'clock we'll start with the network opportunity and the closing will be at 21.00.

About the lectures

A peek into the unseen world of microbes.
By prof.dr. Ariane Briegel
Briegel studies bacteria with imaging techniques which allows for making 3D images of bacteria in their natural state and in high resolution. In this way Briegel and others can study which structures bacteria use to interact with their environment. Hear about these new visual techniques and join us into the unseen world of microbes. 

How to Solve War: The Professor, the Politician, and the Origins of International Relations

What is the role of a scholar or expert in the discipline of International Relations? In this talk, Vineet Thakur will discuss some of the debates around the founding of this discipline and what the scholar/expert in the discipline was meant to do. The story of the beginnings of International Relations, as a discipline, is also a story of taming, what is often called, the problem of anarchy, through a new vision of science and expertise.
The key agent of this change is not the decision-making politician but rather the knowledge-gathering/advocating scholar. The origins of the discipline, or at least one interpretation of the origins, are in making an emphatic case for the ascendance of the scholar over the politician. In other words, International Relations as a discipline emerges not to assist but to overtake the politician as the ultimate arbiter of world politics.
