As part of its overarching goal to support research and education at Leiden University, LUF offers a student membership, provides student grants and awards several prizes.

LUF Student Membership

There's studying and then there's Studying. If you want to make the most of your time as a student in Leiden, all you need is LUF! Your benefits as a Student Member:

  • Great discounts at shops and venues in Leiden
  • Invitations to excellent events
  • Information about student travel grants and grants for student activities

For only 5 euros a year, you could reap the benefits of LUF’s Student Membership. And what’s more: your contribution will go to a good cause, such as the Mandela Scholarship Fund, your study association or your student association. Just fill in this form and send it to You will receive your LUF Student Membership card in the post ASAP. 

Student grants

Leiden University students can apply for various types of student grants:

  • LISF grants
    Students who would like to travel abroad to complete an individual project related to their degree programme can apply for LISF grants.
  • Mr. P. Heering Snr. Fund
    The aim of the Mr. P. Heering Snr. Fund is to enable students at Leiden University’s Faculty of Law to gain experience abroad in the field of European and international law. You can apply here.

  • SVM Packaging and Environment Scholarship
    The Leiden University Fund is, together with Stichting Verpakking en Milieu (Foundation for packaging and the environment), looking for master students who have bright ideas and impactful proposals about this subject. For more information look here.

  • CASSA grants
    Students who have an original idea for an activity that benefits multiple students can apply for CASSA grants.
  • Other student grants
    A number of funds award grants to students with a specific purpose in mind.


Each year, LUF awards several prizes to Leiden University students:

  • Leiden University Thesis Prizes
    Outstanding MA students compete for the Leiden University Thesis Prizes, which are awarded during the Dies natalis for alumni in February. In November, each faculty nominates a candidate. Contact your faculty for more information.
  • LISF Prize
    Excellent reports by recipients of LISF grants are automatically in the running for the LISF Prize.
  • Janneke Fruin-Helb Scholarship
    Extraordinary proposals by students who apply for LISF grants are automatically in the running for a Janneke Fruin-Helb Scholarship.
