Cleveringa 2021
More than eighty years ago, professor Cleveringa read aloud his now famous protest speech in the Great Auditorium. He denounced the measure taken by the Germans of removing all Jewish professors from their posts.
In collaboration with the Cleveringa committees, we organise live and hybrid (live and online) meetings on and around 26 November, to commemorate professor Cleveringa's brave speech.
Live from Leiden
From the Great Auditorium, in the same place where professor Cleveringa gave his impassioned speech, we will broadcast a live event – entirely in English – on Thursday 25 November.
Commercial space flights have prompted new questions. What limits are there to the exploitation of space, both in practical and in legal terms? What is possible and what should we want? These questions are the subject of the 2021 Leiden Cleveringa Meeting entitled 'Freedom, Outer Space, and the Role of the Law'. More information about the speakers and the event can be found on the university website.
Below you'll find all the live English Cleveringa Meetings across the globe. Perhaps you speak Dutch as well? Then please have a look at the other Cleveringa Meetings you can join on Thursday 26 November.

Vaccine equity in development and distribution: on COVID vaccines and beyond
The rapid development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines as a crucial tool to halt the pandemic is an unprecedented scientific achievement. Now, by the end of 2021, only 20% of the poorest population has vaccine access to only 4% of the vaccines. Depending on the country vaccine coverage varies widely between 0.1% and 88%.
Every year more than 400 000 children die from malaria. Decades of research and development have now led to the approval of the first malaria vaccine with an efficacy of 30%. Although a similar unprecedented achievement, the contrast with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development is shocking. Why is the development of vaccines for poverty-related diseases slow? How can we enhance equity in vaccine development and distribution?
