‘Insight can help prevent migraine’

Migraine attacks strike suddenly and can seriously limit people’s lives. People with migraine can experience an aura with flashes of light or coloured spots that affect their vision. They can also develop a pounding headache accompanied by severe nausea and even vomiting. More knowledge about lifestyle factors and triggers will help predict and prevent attacks. The aim is personalised treatment.

‘We know, for example, that hormone fluctuations are an important trigger,’ says Professor Gisela Terwindt, a neurobiologist at the LUMC. ‘That’s probably why three times as many women suffer from migraine. But lifestyle factors can also trigger an attack, such as a lack of sleep. It’s often a combination, which makes it difficult to make individual predictions.’

Terwindt and her team are developing methods to make personal predictions. They are using technology such as a special cap that measures brain activity as well as smartphone data and AI-powered data analysis.
