Contributions from donors also make it possible to fund professors by special appointment. These temporary chairs give talented scientists the opportunity to further build on their field of knowledge and thus also support the development of innovative areas of science.
From special to full professor
A special chair is by definition temporary. The best evidence that such a chair meets a particular need is if it is converted to a full professorship. This gives the chair a structural place within Leiden University. Examples of such chairs are Experimental Psychopathology (Professor A.J.W. van der Does), Applications of Mathematics (Professor C. Roos) and the Public Understanding of Science (Professor S. Haring).
