Research abroad

Grant for research abroad. The study trip must relate to your degree programme. Maximum grant amount: €1,500.
Every year, the best application is awarded the Janneke Fruin-Helb Grant: an additional grant of €500.

Bachelor and Master students affiliated with Leiden University.

  • You must be enrolled at Leiden University and have successfully completed your propedeuse (first year).
  • The study trip abroad must be part of your degree programme. You may submit no more than one LISF application per bachelor’s or master’s degree programme.
  • The final product of your research abroad must be a report in the form of a thesis, academic report and/or academic publication.
  • You must submit a substantive report and financial account via the LUF Grant Portal within two months of completing the project, after which the grant will be paid.
  • Applications must meet Leiden University’s rules on plagiarism and fraud (see here and here).
  • The date of departure must not precede the date of the meeting in which the LISF committee will review your application.
  • You must be available in Leiden between 14:00 and 17:00 on the date on which your application will be considered. This is for a meeting of around 15 minutes in which you will explain your application to two LISF committee members. The meeting must be in person and not online (in Teams, Zoom etc.).
  • Leiden University’s guidelines for business trips abroad apply to your travel expenses.
  • You must submit a substantive report and financial account via the LUF Grant Portal within two months of completing the study trip, after which the grant will be paid out.
  • Applications that contravene restrictive measures adopted by the government or Leiden University or that apply in  the destination country (code orange or red) will not be considered.

  • Application review: LUF International Study Fund (LISF) committee.
  • Submit your application via the LUF Grant Portal.
  • Applications may be submitted in Dutch or English and must contain a short description (300-750 words), an action plan, your motivation (300-600 words), how the trip relates to your degree programme, the role of your supervisors, the reason for visiting the location abroad incl. sustainability aspects and a budget with only the costs and income stated in the grant portal (do not include your own contribution, DUO loan or savings).
  • Required documents for application submission: CV of max 2 pages, grade list, letter of confirmation from the foreign location to be visited and letter of recommendation with signature of associated UL lecturer, coordinator or study advisor.
    Note: if the grant portal does not provide sufficient space to upload all documents individually, please combine the relevant documents into a single file and upload them together.
  • The LISF committee will review applications according to the following criteria:
    • The study trip abroad must be of clear additional academic value and relate to your degree programme. The added value of the location abroad must be clearly demonstrable.
    • You must have promising study results and a strong CV.
    • You must have a clear action plan for the study trip abroad. 
    • The methods, planning, organisation and supervision of the scientific project or research internship are explained and are solid, enabling you to complete the research within the time set. 
    • Your project is original, with your own input in the choice and/or design of the research.
    • The application must reflect your motivation and enthusiasm.
    • You must be familiar with the subject matter and get this across in a way that non-specialists will understand in your application.
    • The application must show that you have considered the societal aspects of the study trip abroad (sustainability of travel and accommodation, test animals, etc.)
    • Your study trip abroad must have a solid financial grounding.
  • You will be notified after the LISF committee’s application review meeting about whether your application was successful and if so, the grant amount awarded. The amount of the grant depends on the quality of your application.
  • Grants awarded will be paid immediately on the basis of a travel document to the destination (flight or train ticket). You can upload the travel document to the LUF Grant Portal.

Participating in a conference abroad

Grant for participating in a conference abroad. The study trip must relate to your degree programme.
Maximum grant amount: witing Europe €300,
outside of Europe €600.

Bachelor and Master students affiliated with Leiden University.

  • The study trip abroad must be part of your degree programme. You may submit no more than one LISF application per bachelor’s or master’s degree programme.

    • The application must show that you have considered the societal aspects of the study trip abroad (sustainability of travel and accommodation, test animals, etc.)

An experience internship abroad

Grant for an experience internship abroad. The study trip must relate to your degree programme. Maximum grant amount: €750.

Bachelor and Master students affiliated with Leiden University.

  • You must be enrolled at Leiden University and have successfully completed your propedeuse (first year).
  • The study trip abroad must be part of your degree programme. You may submit no more than one LISF application per bachelor’s or master’s degree programme.
  • An experience internship refers to an internship at a company or institute, internships or fieldwork for which ECTS can be obtained.
  • You must submit a substantive report and financial account via the LUF Grant Portal within two months of completing the project, after which the grant will be paid.
  • Applications must meet Leiden University’s rules on plagiarism and fraud (see here and here).
  • The date of departure must not precede the date of the meeting in which the LISF committee will review your application.
