Trusts and foundations

The world is changing rapidly. Climate change, digitalisation, social inequality, health, and geopolitical tensions call for new solutions and insights. Leiden University plays a leading role in addressing these challenges. To continue fulfilling this role, support from committed trusts and foundations is essential.

The Leiden University Fund (LUF) connects philanthropy with academic impact. As a trust or foundation, you can contribute directly through LUF to projects that align with your mission, values, or objectives.

Transparent giving, personal involvement

Foundations and trusts play an increasingly important role in enabling research and education with societal impact. By working together, we strengthen each other’s mission. We bring academic expertise, talent and engagement with key societal themes. You bring vision, experience and resources. We also connect you with the right researchers and  project leaders within our university – experts who are committed to the same issues and goals as your organisation. Together, we ensure the best possible match in content and purpose – and achieve maximum impact.

Whether you make a one-off donation, seek a long-term partnership, or consider establishing a named fund – we ensure your support is used with care, reported on clearly, and results in visible impact. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the researchers and students behind the projects in person. Through events, guided visits, or personal conversations, you’ll hear first-hand about their progress, their passion, and the significance of your support. In this way, giving becomes an inspiring collaboration.

We welcome co-creation, shaping projects together that align with your objectives and our academic ambitions.

Science and practice united for children

A remarkable example of fruitful collaboration is the UNICEF Chair in Children's Rights. Since 2021, Professor Ton Liefaard has held this unique position, which is one of a kind globally. Leiden and UNICEF decided to develop this young discipline together after every country except the US signed the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. ‘We have brought together countless people who now work together in children’s rights,’ Liefaard says. ‘So I’m talking about research, teaching and professionals. In that sense we have become a kind of catalyst of knowledge on children’s rights.’

ANBI-status

The Leiden University Fund (LUF) holds ANBI status, a designation by the Dutch Tax Administration for organisations that serve the public good. This means that your donation may be tax-efficient under Dutch law, and it ensures that 100% of your contribution supports charitable and academic goals.
