University lecturer in criminology and research fellow Dr Joni Reef can make a start on her research on family-focused work in criminal sentencing. She has been awarded a subsidy of €24,000 from the partnership between the LUF and the Gratama Foundation.

‘The LUF grant meant I could build new collaborations with other researchers in Chile.’ Astronomy master’s student Wout Goesaert travelled to Chile for his research on a ‘supermassive black hole’ in the Circinus galaxy.

LUF also supports scientists at Leiden University who are involved in organising conferences and workshops. Decisions on funding are based not only on the scientific objective, but also on how relevant the field of science and the findings are to society.

A better understanding of schizophrenia and its medical treatment was the goal of the Schizophrenia symposium for Royal Dutch Pharmaceutical Student Association (K.N.P.S.V.) members. A LUF donation helped make the symposium possible.

They didn’t study at Leiden University, but Patrice Gerlach and Ellen Reuter have still chosen to leave a legacy to the LUF. A journey through Cambodia made them realise just how much of an impact education can have on the well-being of an entire family.

The Committee for Academic Expenditure (CWB) of the Leiden University Fund (LUF) awards grants for research and teaching projects, ranging from € 2,600 tot € 35,000.

A signing ceremony took place in the Academy Building on Thursday 11 December to confirm a new endowment to the Leporis Fund, a named LUF fund. This celebrated a special moment in the continued legacy of Ruurt Hazewinkel, an alumnus and ardent advocate of research and teaching.

Leiden University celebrates its birthday on 8 February. Traditionally, the LUF organises the Dies Natalis for alumni on the following Saturday. During this festive day, scientists from the university will inform you with great enthusiasm about current research results and developments in their field.
